LAHORE: Pakistan marks the second death anniversary of world-renowned philanthropist and social worker Abdul Sattar Edhi on Sunday.
Founder of the Edhi Foundation, Edhi became famous for running the largest volunteer ambulance network in the world. Edhi Foundation also runs homeless shelters, animal shelters, rehab centres and orphanages across Pakistan.
Born on February 28, 1928, in Gujrat before the partition, his family migrated to Pakistan in 1947 and dedicated his life to the poor and needy.
The Edhi Foundation owns 2,400 ambulances and three air ambulances across the country. The organisation has been entered in the Guinness World Records as the “largest volunteer ambulance organisation”.
During his life, Abdul Sattar Edhi was honoured with several awards for his assiduous work in the cause of humanity, both nationally and internationally. He received the 1986 Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service in Manila, the Philippines also was known as the Asian Noble. He was also the recipient of the Lenin Peace Prize and the Balzan Prize in Italy.
In 2006, Institute of Business Administration Pakistan (IBA) conferred an honorary degree of Doctor of Social Service Management for his services. In September 2010, Edhi was also awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of Bedfordshire. In 1989, he received the Nishan-e-Imtiaz from the Government of Pakistan.
Edhi breathed his last on 8 July 2016 at the age of 88 in Karachi after a protracted illness.
