After several attempts to vandalise the page by users and bots, the Wikipedia has changed the status of Maryam Nawaz’s page to semi-protected in line with its ‘biographies of living persons policy’.
Following the accountability court verdict that sentenced the former first daughter to seven years in prison, internet users attempted to vandalise her page with words like ‘criminal and chor’ [thief], besides making attempts to change her birth year from 1973 to 1960.
Although this is not the first time that her page has been protected, its protection level had previously been changed for shorter periods of time compared to the one-year change this time.
Earlier in 2017, Nawaz Sharif’s Wikipedia page was also put on semi-protection following his disqualification from the post of the prime minister by the Supreme Court (SC) in Panama Papers case.
Other Pakistani political figures whose pages are semi-protected include Asif Ali Zardari and Imran Khan.
