Water shortage in Satpara Dam triggers alarm in Astore

ASTORE: The district administration of Astore has issued an alert call and sought suggestions from all the stakeholders to cope with any situation after acute shortage of water was reported in Satpara Dam.

The administration here on Tuesday said water level in Satpara Dam has fallen to alarming level that may trigger the issue of outages and water crises in the area.

Owing to the situation, the administration has sought suggestions and appealed for cooperation from the local community.

The administration warned that supply of electricity, generated through the dam may be affected badly from the month of September besides creating shortage of water for the drinking and irrigation purposes.

The local community and administration suggested that the water should be saved for drinking and irrigation requirements and it was also agreed upon that steps should be taken to save the water from wastage.

A committee under the headship of SE, C&W Engineer Amir Hussain was formed to monitor the situation and taking steps for devising a strategy for the future water needs. The committee will present its report to the administration after inspecting water level situation in the dam.

The administration also appealed to the local community to avoid unnecessary use of water and electricity to minimize the extent of situation.

The traders’ community has advised the administration that GB government should take steps for supply of electricity to Skardu from Sarmak, Tormak and Kachura besides functionalizing all the dysfunctional dams of the region.
