The first motion poster of Gul Makai, a biopic on Nobel peace prize winner Malala Yousafzai, the courageous Pakistani activist who defied Taliban, was unveiled Tuesday.
The poster depicts a young girl holding open a book while an explosion takes place on the book. The name of the biopic, Gul Makai, is the pseudonym Malala used while writing blogs for BBC Urdu during the rule of the Taliban.
“This is about those times when the Taliban was destroying Pakistan and Afghanistan in the name of Jihad and religion. When from a very small village in Pakistan, a voice arose,” the deep voice of Kabir Bedi echoes in the background.
Shot in Kashmir, Gul Makai is directed by Indian filmmaker Amjad Khan and traces the then socio-political atmosphere of Pakistan. The film starres Reem Shaikh, Divya Dutta, Mukesh Rishi, Abhimanyu Singh and Ajaz Khan.
Speaking about the biopic, Khan had earlier said, “The film chronicles the journey of Malala from her days in Swat Valley to her becoming the youngest Noble peace prize winner. Major part of the film has already been shot in Bhuj and Mumbai and we are here in Kashmir to shoot the last leg of the movie.”
He further said the film aims to capture Malala’s spirit, her fight, and also the reality and suffering of the people of Pakistan.
At the age of 17, Malala became the youngest person to win the Nobel Peace Prize after surviving an assassination attempt by the Taliban in 2012.
Currently a student at the Oxford University, she is also a founder of the Malala Fund, a non-profit organisation and the co-author I am Malala, an international bestseller. She has continued to speak out on the importance of education, especially in females.
