UK ends collaboration with Pakistan in Imran Farooq murder case

• Scotland Yard chief says there are discrepancies in the case

United Kingdom’s Scotland Yard has decided to end its collaboration with Pakistan in the Imran Farooq murder case owing to a communication gap among other complexities pertaining to the case.

Dr Farooq, a former leader of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), was found murdered near his home in North London on September 16, 2010.

Despite a passage of eight years, London police have not able to apprehend the murderers. Though, an anti-terrorism court in Pakistan has indicted three suspects in the case. According to the statements of the accused, Dr Farooq was murdered as he was a threat to the MQM chief Altaf Hussain.

During her appearance before the Home Affairs Select Committee where she was questioned on Dr Imran Farooq’s case by British MP Naz Shah, Scotland Yard chief Cressida Dick said that “there were and there had been some very complex issues to resolve between the two countries”.

Speaking about the police’s efforts to locate the murderers, she said, “We [police] have put an enormous amount of resources into the investigation. We are absolutely determined that we will bring the murderers of Dr Farooq to justice.”

However, admitting that there are hurdles in the case, she said that this case was a “complex one” to solve as it has strong overseas connections. We are working very closely with the Foreign Office and other authorities and we will do everything in our power to try to bring the murderers to justice. We have taken action and brought the file to the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service).”

“We will seek to uphold the law and we are absolutely determined to try to bring those responsible to justice,” she went on to say.

Speaking about Dr Imran’s family including his widow and two sons, MP Naz said, “They deserve justice and I will continue to raise voice for them.”

She added that the family deserves a better life in terms of finances.
