Ranbir Kapoor who received acclaim for his lead performance in the film has crossed his previous record. His biggest opener before Sanju was the critically acclaimed Besharam which had made Rs21 crore on its opening day.

Sanju has a 43% score on review aggregator site, Rotten Tomatoes. The Hindustan Times review said that “Sanju is another gem in Ranbir Kapoor’s repertoire, however the same can’t be said about Rajkumar Hirani. Sanju is watchable but is a very average fare.”
