PSP’s petition challenging Karachi census results to be heard by SC

KARACHI: A petition filed by the Pak Sarzameen Party (PSP) challenging Karachi’s sixth census would be heard by the Supreme Court after general elections, a local media outlet reported on Friday.

Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar on Friday allowed the petition to be fixed for hearing. Previously the petition was rejected by the registrar officer over a number of objections.

PSP leader Mustafa Kamal, in the petition, had requested the ECP to reallocate national and provincial assembly seats in Karachi on the basis of latest Nadra data. Moreover, the petition argued that the 2017 population census underestimated Karachi’s population by over 5.2 million by estimating current population at 23.9 million. The petition also gave a number of reasons for the position.

The Supreme Court was requested by the petition to summon fresh and accurate data from Nadra, Pakistan Bureau of Statistics and the census commission as well.
