ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday stopped contempt of court proceedings against Mir Shakilur Rehman after he tendered an unconditional apology.

A three-member bench of the top court, headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar, had issued a notice to Rehman for his contemptuous statements made outside the Supreme Court.

When Rehman appeared before the apex court on Thursday, the chief justice remarked that Shakil and his channel, Geo News, should be careful in matters related to the judicial institution.

Clarifying that he did not intend to commit contempt of court, Rehman ensured the court that he will be careful in the future.

The Jang Group chief is also a defendant in a suo motu case pertaining to non-payment of staff salaries.

In a hearing on April 4, the top judge had ordered the media group to dispense salaries to all its employees by April 30. The bench had also asked the media house to pay the salaries even if it has to “beg or borrow”.

The apex court had warned to shut down TV channels where owners do not pay their staff, adding that employees were the backbone of any organisation.
