ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Information on Thursday notified the appointment of Mirza Saleem Baig as the chairman of the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA).

The notification states that Baig will be serving the media regulator for the next four years.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Information’s notification comes a day after Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar, while presiding over a three-member bench resumed the hearing of the PEMRA chairman appointment case on Wednesday, during which he had ordered the issuance of notification within two days.

During the hearing, the petitioner’s counsel had submitted that the media regulator’s selected candidate did not satisfy the post’s eligibility criteria. The CJP said that the court was not interested in the issue, noting that Baig’s nomination as PEMRA chairman had been approved by President Mamnoon Hussain last month.

An officer of the Information Service, Baig previously served as the Principal Information Officer with the federal government.
