The son of Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Qamarul Islam has appealed to the general public for support for his father.

In a heartfelt video message shared on social media, the 12-year-old said that he will go to the Rawalpindi registry on Wednesday for his father’s release. He also appealed to the general public to support him in the process.

Islam, PML-N’s ticket holder for NA-59 Rawalpindi-III, was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Monday in connection with Punjab Saaf Pani Company corruption case.

Meanwhile, Islam’s daughter, Uswa Islam, said that her father is an honest man, alleging that the purpose of Islam’s arrest is to “sabotage his election campaign.” She said that another purpose of her father’s arrest was to affect the popularity of the PML-N.

Uswa said that her father was present at NAB’s Lahore office following a letter written to him pertaining to an inquiry by the anti-graft body.

“My father is a diabetic and he is not being allowed administration of injections,” she alleged.

Earlier on Tuesday, Accountability court (AC) approved a 14-day physical remand of the PML-N leader. Islam and former Saaf Pani Company CEO Waseem Ajmal were presented in the court a day after they were arrested by NAB.

Qamarul Islam, who has served as the chairman of the Saaf Pani Company, is accused of having awarded contracts for 84 water treatment plants at a higher price.

The Punjab government established the company to conceive, plan, design, execute and manage projects for the provision of safe drinking water, in terms of both access and quality, to the communities living in unserved and underserved areas i.e. rural and peri-urban areas of the province.

According to the NAB, Islam misused his position and awarded contracts at a higher rate.

The arrest came a day after the PML-N fielded Islam against disgruntled PML-N leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan in the NA-59 constituency.

Talking about Islam’s arrest, PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif said on Monday that he was upset because of his arrest. Disgruntled PML-N leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan also said that the arrest was condemnable. PML-N spokesperson Marriyum Aurangzeb termed the arrest as pre-poll rigging.
