Hockey Champions Trophy: ‘Confident’ Pakistan to face Netherlands today

NETHERLANDS: Pakistani team will face host country Netherlands in Breda, the Netherlands on their third match of Champions Trophy.

Pakistan lost their tournament’s opening game to India with 4-0. Followed by another loss to top-ranked Australian team by 2-1.

The Netherlands ranked number and 4 lost their opening game to Argentina 2-1, however, the team went ahead and thrashed Belgian team 6-1.

Pakistan won the inaugural edition of the Champions Trophy held in Lahore in 1978 beating Australian team in the finals.

In 1982, Pakistan bagged their second title by beating West Germany in Karachi.

The last time Pakistan won the Champions Trophy’s title in 1994, held in Lahore when they faced Germany again. This time the team won 7-6 on penalty strokes.

The Pakistani hockey teams have thus so far won three titles, and have finished seven times as runner-up in 1983, 1984, 1988, 1991, 1996, 1998 and 2014.

The tournament will be replaced by Hockey Pro League (HPL) in 2019.

Pakistan will be facing Argentina on June 28 followed by the match against Belgium on June 29.

The match between Pakistan and Netherlands will start at 11pm Pakistan Standard Time (PST).
