CM reiterates caretaker setup’s resolve to hold fair polls

–Dr Hasan Askari says supremacy of law will be ensured at all costs

LAHORE: Punjab Caretaker Chief Minister Dr Hasan Askari on Monday said that holding free and transparent elections was the top priority of the interim government and provincial administration was fully active in this regard.

“We will ensure a smooth electoral process by ensuring the implementation of the code of conduct issued by Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP). The caretaker government is determined and confident for the complete implementation of law by maintaining its complete impartiality,” said the chief minister in a statement issued here.

He said a level playing field had been provided to the candidates of all the political parties as well as the independent contestants so that they could take part in the electoral process and the voters could choose their candidates in a free and fair atmosphere.

“The arrangements are being completed for the peaceful holding of elections besides ensuring implementation of code of conduct in the districts,” said Dr Askari, adding that provision of a peaceful environment to the voters was the basic responsibility of the government and every citizen would have to extend full cooperation.

He said that law and order would be upheld during the polling process and no one would be allowed to take law into his or her own hands. He made it clear that supremacy of law would be ensured in case of any violation of electoral rules and regulations and added that free and fair elections were the foremost condition of the sustainable democracy.

“Caretaker government is utilising all its resources for transparent polls and work is being done around-the-clock to make the electoral process a success by adopting an effective monitoring system.”

He said that all constitutional measures would be adopted which were the foundation of peaceful and fair elections so the people could get a chance to use their right of franchise. “Implementation on the devised mechanism will be ensured under all circumstances,” concluded the chief minister.
