KARACHI: An acute water shortage has emerged in Karachi after water levels of Hub dam dropped to a dangerously low level.

Residents of Karachi’s central district on Saturday complained of severed water scarcity after the Sakhi Hassan hydrant refused to facilitate them.

Water tanks waited in long queues at the hydrant that facilitates 300 to 400 requests of water tankers on daily basis.

Women waiting in lines for their turn since last night said the Water Board officials have refused to provide water tankers.

Karachi’s main water sources are Keenjhar Lake (Indus River) and Hub dam from where water is pumped through three main pumping stations located at Dhabeji, Gharo, and Hub.

Former provincial minister Jam Khan Shoro stated that about 555MGD are supplied from the Indus river and 100MGD from the Hub dam to meet the needs of Karachi’s 17 million population.
