–Bakhtawar Bhutto-Zardari says no consent was sought from the family for the film starring Mehwish Hayat as former PPP leader

The world celebrated the late Benazir Bhutto’s birthday on Thursday. Had she been alive, she would have been welcoming her 65th year. However, it appears that filmmakers in Pakistan are planning to immortalise the slain PPP leader by making a biopic on her life and they have cast none other than Mehwish Hayat as Bhutto.

While other details surrounding the project are not known as yet, Mehwish on Benazir’s birthday, posted a photo to Instagram with the announcement.

However, in an interesting turn of events, Benazir’s daughter, Bakhtawar Bhutto Zardari has slammed the idea, saying that no consent was sought from the family for the project.

“Certainly no consent from her living heirs/children was sought. Absolutely unacceptable and we will be taking action against it,” Bakhtwar wrote on Twitter, sharing the news report.

Mehwish had earlier posted a picture of herself with the “Daughter of the East’s” book in her lap, along which she wrote, “We have broken glass ceilings, we have broken the stereotypes, and we have been and continue to be prepared to go the extra mile, to be judged by unrealistic standards, to be held more accountable.”

The award-winning actor continued, “Today would have been Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto’s 65th birthday. It is an ideal time to reflect on her undoubted achievements.”

“I have never really been a political person but leaving that aside there is no denying the great strides she made for women’s empowerment and equality in our country – everything we are still fighting for even today.”

“There was a time when she made women believe that almost anything was possible – she gave us hope and inspired us to reach for the stars,” Hayat added.

She then went on to confirm that she is indeed working on and doing research for Bhutto’s biopic, “I am privileged to have been given the opportunity to research and learn more about her life and sitting here I can only reflect on so much more that could have been had she not lost her life so tragically.”

“The sign of a true leader is the legacy they leave behind and the reverence with which the people remember her irrespective of party allegiances,” Hayat further wrote. “She was a truly remarkable woman and I look forward to giving life to her story soon.”

Previously, Hayat took to Instagram to share a screenshot of a local publication’s article which suggested that the actor will soon be taking Benazir to the silver screen.

The news of Hayat starring in a Bhutto biopic went viral on social media. Sharing the picture, she wrote, “Benazir is a true hero of mine, a real powerful woman and an inspiration for many millions around the world. Would be a privilege and honour to play her on screen and bring her wonderful journey, her inspirational story to the world!”

This is definitely one biopic we cannot wait for! There is definitely striking resemblance between the two.
