ISLAMABAD: Senate Standing Committee on Interior decided to hold an in-camera briefing pertaining to a comment by an Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) official that “international powers could try to influence the upcoming general elections”.
Senator Rehman Malik chaired the committee and directed the Interior Ministry to ensure foolproof security during the upcoming polls.
Senator Javed Abbasi said that ECP Secretary Babar Yaqoob had claimed that “international powers that could try to influence the elections” and he was ready to give an in-camera breifieng regarding the matter.
The senator added, “[The ECP secretary] clearly said that some international powers do not want free and fair elections and they will disrupt them and he had information that should be shared with the committee so we should hold an in-camera meeting to discuss the issue because it will give us an idea of which powers are against the elections and we will be able to play our role to address the issue.”
The committee decided to hold the said briefing and also include intelligence agencies in the session.
