The capital administration on Wednesday sent a request to the interior minister for the deployment of Rangers at Bani Gala for the security of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan.
The request for deployment of troops comes after the demand made by the ICT police who told the administration that the protesters who have gathered outside Imran’s home could cause damage to his life and property.
“It is requested that Rangers Sector Commander may be approached and requested to deploy 300 personnel in aid of the police to perform duty at the house,” the police added.
The PTI workers from Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) have been protesting outside the residence of Imran at Bani Gala since June 3 over the distribution of tickets for the upcoming general elections. They staged a sit-in a few yards away from Imran’s residence.
On Monday, the capital police took over the security duties of Imran’s residence by replacing private security guards.
Four police reserves, each comprising 25 personnel, were guarding the Banigala residence. Besides, dozens of policemen also deployed on the road leading to the house.
A couple of police reserves and the anti-riot unit also put on a standby to deal with any emergency and law and order situation at Bani Gala or the PTI chief’s house.
When contacted, Islamabad Deputy Commissioner Captain (r) Mushtaq Ahmed confirmed that the Rangers had been sought to maintain law and order there and they were expecting a reply from the interior ministry.
