ISLAMABAD: Caretaker Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control Muhammad Azam Khan on Wednesday stressed devising a coordinated strategy in collaboration with the international organisations to meet the common challenges of climate change.
Addressing the inaugural session of the two-day international conference – Capitalising on Pakistan’s experience in handling disasters, creating synergies among global frameworks lessons learnt and the way forward, he said that Pakistan was fully committed to play its role in serving humanity facing disasters.
He said that Pakistan was committed to reduce disaster risks and strengthen the organisations managing disasters. He said that Pakistan has incurred huge losses due to natural calamities; however, it was now fully capable to deal with such situations through lessons learnt.
He said that the government was committed to help NDMA in reducing disaster risks. He lauded the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) for hosting such an important conference for countering disasters and reducing risks. Pakistan has made significant progress in managing disasters, he said.
The two days disaster discussion would help devising a common strategy to cope with disasters. Speaking on the occasion, National Disaster Management Authority Chairman Umer Mehmood Hayat said that the disaster management system in the country has been improved. He said that the system has been playing an important role in proving first hand aid to the people affected by disasters.
UNDP Country Director Ignacio Artaza assured UN support for policies that target both natural resource management and climate change mitigation at national, provincial and community levels. Highlighting natural beauty in Pakistan, Swiss Ambassador to Pakistan Thomas Kolly said that Pakistan was playing an important role in dealing with floods and other calamities in the region.
