Ahmad Shahzad tested positive for doping: reports

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan opener Ahmed Shahzad has been tested positive for a prohibited substance, media reports claimed on Wednesday.

According to details, Shahzad can face a ban of at least three months from international cricket for violating the anti-doping laws. The opener, however, reserves the option to give second sample test.

Reports said Shahzad’s test was taken during a recent domestic cricket tournament. “Ahmad Shahzad has been tested positive for Marijuana – the test was conducted prior to the Scotland series during Pakistan Cup,” tweeted cricket analyst Zainab Abbas.

In a media statement, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) did not name Shahzad, however, confirmed that a player was tested positive for a prohibited substance. “A player has reportedly tested positive for a prohibited substance. But under ICC rules PCB cannot name the player or chargesheet him until the chemical report is CONFIRMED by the Anti-Dope Agency of the government. We should have an answer in a day or two,” PCB said.

Reports stated that the authorities gave the unfortunate news in a meeting held between selection committee and Head Coach Mickey Arthur while discussing the probable squad for Zimbabwe tour.

It was learned that the PCB has decided to not consider Shahzad for selection for the upcoming tour. Meanwhile, Muhammad Hafeez and Shan Masood have become strong contenders for the opening slot.

It added that World Anti-Doping Agency will decide action against the Pakistani opener. Shahzad had scored 14 and 24 runs in his last matches against Scotland.
