Lack of staff at ECP likely to affect upcoming polls

ISLAMABAD: Certain important positions at Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) lie vacant, which has created an administrative crisis at the commission and may affect the upcoming polls, reported a private media outlet.

According to details, the seats of three director generals, three additional secretary generals, three directors and seven regional election commissioners are vacant.

Moreover, dozens of posts from grade 18-21 are also vacant beside the posts of two provincial election commissioners. The posts of additional secretaries admin, training and research offices are also vacant.

After Dr Akhtar Nazir’s appointment as Balochistan chief secretary, the post of election additional secretary lies vacant, while Zafar Iqbal Malik’s appointment as Punjab election commissioner has left the post of training additional secretary vacant.

According to reports, 10 seats of district election commissioners and 20 seats of election officers are also vacant.

However, Election Commission Spokesperson Nadeem Qasim assured that current crisis will not affect the upcoming elections.
