ISLAMABAD: The ‘abduction’ of Gul Bukhari caused a furore with condemnations pouring from every quarter yet no official complaint of the incident has been filed with the police by the journalist or her family, states a report submitted to the Senate’s standing committee on human rights by the Punjab Police Inspector-General (IG).

According to the report, Gul was abducted on her way to a private news channel when three vehicles ambushed her car on Lahore’s Abid Majeed Road and two ‘unknown’ persons dragged her into one of their cars.

Soon after the incident, Gul’s husband, Nadir Ali along with her driver, Ahmed Ali reached a police station at 2:30 am on June 6 to report her kidnapping.

It was then that her husband received a call informing him of Gul’s safe return to home, which prompted him to rush back to their residence without filing an official complaint.

“The FIR of the incident was lodged at the police station at Sarwar Road, Lahore by the station house officer (SHO) following which an investigation was launched,” the report said.

However, the report fails to mention whether the victim was contacted after her return or not.

Standing Committee on Human Rights Chairman Mustafa Nawaz Khokhar while talking to a local news source confirmed that he had received the report and added, “It will be shared in the committee meeting scheduled on Monday in Quetta. The issue will be taken up after Eid in Lahore”.
