CJP orders removal of AIMC principal Dr Zia

LAHORE: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Mian Saqib Nisar on Sunday ordered removal of Allama Iqbal Medical College (AIMC) Principal Prof Dr Rashid Zia from his office.

The chief justice ordered the Punjab chief secretary for appointment of a new regular principal after forming a new search committee for the purpose. The chief justice passed the orders while hearing different complaints at the Supreme Court’s Lahore Registry.

During the hearing, the chief justice observed that he visited the Jinnah Hospital and found the conditions unsatisfactory. He questioned the mode of appointment of Prof Dr Rashid Zia as principal. During his recent visit to the Jinnah Hospital, the chief justice expressed dissatisfaction over lack of facilities.

He reviewed the treatment facilities provided to the patients by the hospital administration. He had visited various wards of the hospital and enquired the problems from the patients which they are facing there. He also visited the operation theater of emergency.

MEDICAL COLLEGES’ CASE: Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) submitted report before the Supreme Court in case pertaining to exorbitant fees received by the medical colleges. A two-member bench headed Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Saqib Nisar and comprising Justice Ijazul Ahsan resumed hearing of suo motu notice.

During hearing, Justice Ijaz remarked that the court would not allow running the medical colleges as industries. FIA director stated that the medical colleges were receiving excessive sum of money from the students under guise of quota, donations and co-curricular activities. He informed the court that the investigation body had recovered money worth Rs480 million from the private medical colleges which they charged students illegally.
