GUJRAT: The Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) may give support to the Pakistan Muslim League- Quaid (PML-Q) if PPP’s Ahmed Mukhtar does not contest from NA-169, a local media outlet reported on Tuesday.

PPP Chairman Asif Ali Zardari had said asked the party’s Punjab chapter to avoid fielding a candidate if Chaudhry Ahmed Mukhtar was unwilling to participate.

The PPP has also not allocated a ticket for the NA-169 seat as it was deemed to be reserved for Mukhtar, though he himself has neither asked for a ticket or participated in politics since losing in the 2013 elections to Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi. In addition, neither Mukhtar nor his family members have collected the nomination papers.

Asif Ali Zardari had asked Mukhtar to let the party leadership know about his decision to contest in the elections but he has not yet responded.

A PPP official said that since Mukhtar has not responded, the party may not field any candidate against the PML-Q although the decision to whether or not to support PML-Q would be taken at a later point.
