ISLAMABAD: Information Secretary Ahmed Nawaz Sukhera said that Pakistan Television Corporation (PTV) was in decline due to lack of resources and violation of merit during appointments.

The information secretary was briefing the Senate Standing Committee on Information, Broadcasting and National Heritage, and said, “It is unfortunate that in the past, appointments were made without advertising the posts or holding a competitive process and people would file their application on plain paper and they would be appointed and paid high salaries of Rs0.4 million and there are also examples that the day after the appointments were made, it was decided that the salary will be increased from Rs0.4 million to Rs0.5 million.”

PTV was still using equipment that the corporation had bought in 1974, he added.

PTV has 4,065 regular employees, 190 resource persons, 293 daily wagers, 447 contractual staff, 83 professionals and 50 anchorpersons,” also said the information secretary.
