The trailer for the most-awaited film of the year just dropped and we have to say that we are at loss for words.

Based on the controversial and happening life of Bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, Sanju has been directed by award-winning filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani and shows Ranbir Kapoor as Dutt.

The two things which stood out in the trailer were firstly Sanjay Dutt’s life which has shown to be nothing short of a rollercoaster ride; and secondly how perfectly Ranbir has merged himself with his subject. The portrayal of Ranbir as Dutt is so real that in most scenes he is unrecognisable as himself.

The trailer opens with a 90s Sanjay excited about the release of his ‘autobiography,’ after which the three-minute long trailer takes you through the various stages of the actor’s life. From his drug addiction to his ‘350 girlfriends’ to his time in jail and his connection to terrorist activities: the trailer presents a short but bare-it-all insight into the tumultuous life of Bollywood’s ‘Baba.’

The trailer also shows glimpses of Paresh Rawal who plays Dutt’s father; Vicky Kaushal who plays his best friend, Sonam Kapoor, his love interest, Tina Mumin; Dia Mirza as his wife Manyata; and Manisha Koirala as Sanjay’s mother. While Anushka Sharma’s role in the film was unclear in the trailer, it was revealed at the trailer launch that she will be essaying a biographer.

“Anushka is playing a biographer from London who comes to India. Sanjay wanted someone to write his story but she doesn’t want to. She is basically playing a mix of me and Abhijat (writer Abhijat Joshi),” Hirani said at the trailer launch.

Speaking about portraying the various stages of Sanjay Dutt’s life, Ranbir said, “I am more the romantic types, I am not the th*rki types. The most challenging part was young Sanjay Dutt – how he dealt with his mother’s death, drugs…first chapter was very challenging. It was certainly not chocolate at all, more of liquor.”

Sanju is slated to release on June 29.
