ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Marriyum Aurangzeb on Wednesday inaugurated Pakistan Television (PTV) Parliament Channel and said that the channel will telecast live proceedings of both houses of Parliament, Standing Committees and will deepen the connection between public representatives and the people.

Speaking at the inauguration ceremony of the channel, she said people will watch the channel and become aware of the issues raised by members of parliament from their constituencies and see broadcasts of the passage of budget and finance bill and meetings of standing committees.

National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, Marriyum Aurangzeb, Senate Standing Committee on Information and Broadcasting Chairman Faisal Javed and Information Secretary Ahmed Nawaz Sukhera pressed a button to formally launch the PTV Parliament Channel.

The minister said that the leadership of Pakistan Muslim League- Nawaz (PML-N) and National Assembly speaker gave her a number of opportunities to work despite the common practice that those who become parliamentarians for the first time rarely get such a chance to serve the people.

She said that launch of the channel is a welcome step, adding the content of programmes for the channel would be prepared with the assistance of Pakistan Institute of Parliamentary Studies (PIPS).

She thanked the entire team of PTV for completing the project and appreciated National Assembly and Senate for extending full cooperation in this connection.

The minister said when she came to the Parliament, she started to understand the actual work done by the Parliament.

“This is the first phase of the Parliament Channel and in future, it will become a full-fledged channel and the next Parliament will have its role to improve its working,” she said.

She expressed hope that the channel will be fully able to inform the people about the role and functioning of Parliament.

Information Secretary Ahmed Nawaz Sukhera said it is a big day as the channel would be the step towards further strengthening of democracy. He said people should have information as to how state broadcaster is performing while spending money of taxpayers, adding Senate chairman and National Assembly speaker helped the government in the launch of the project of the new channel.
