RAWALPINDI – Retired Lieutenant General Asad Durrani, former spy chief who headed the ISI, has been put under the Exit Control List (ECL) amidst accusations that he has defamed Pakistan Army by claiming that it eliminated Osama bin Laden.
Lt Gen Durrani, who co-wrote The Spy Chronicles: RAW, ISI and the Illusion of Peace with Amarjit Singh Dulat, former head of the Indian intelligence Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), has been accused of accusing the Army of being in the knowhow about the whereabouts of the then world’s most wanted terrorist, in turn cooperating with the United States for his removal.
The allegations contradict the state narrative wherein it is claimed that the all-powerful institution had absolutely no idea that such a high profile terrorist, the head of al-Qaeda, had been living next to a military academy in the city of Abbottabad.
“He could be court martialed for that outrageously false claim,” a senior military official said while talking to The Dependent. “Suggesting that his country had a role in the elimination of a terrorist that was responsible for killing so many people is treason. And saying that the Army did it, is blatant betrayal of his institution.”
