Asif Ali Zardari condemns killing of Charan Jeet Singh

ISLAMABAD: Former president and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) Co-Chairman Asif Ali Zardari has “strongly condemned” the killing of human rights activist Charan Jeet Singh who was gunned down in Peshawar on Wednesday.

He was also known as a strong opponent of terrorism and extremism.

In a statement, Asif Ali Zardari said: “it is most unfortunate and condemnable that a strong voice for religious harmony and human rights was silenced.” He demanded the authorities to immediately arrest the assailants and bring them to book. He also sympathised with the bereaved family.

On Wednesday, Sardar Charan Jeet Singh, an active leader of the Sikh community in Peshawar, was shot dead by unknown assailants in his shop near the Kohat General Bus Stand, Kohat Road.

A police official had said that Sardar Charan Jeet Singh was present in his shop when unknown motorcyclists had opened fire at him, killing him instantly. The assailants succeeded in escaping unharmed, the official had added.

Belonging to Tirah Valley of far-flung Khyber Agency, Charan Jeet shifted to Peshawar along with his other close relatives around two decades ago.
