PESHAWAR: Peshawar High Court (PHC) will hear a case regarding a crematory ground for Hindus and Sikhs in Peshawar today.
The petitioner claimed that 60,000 Sikhs across the province did not have any crematory ground for them to perform final rites for their loved ones.
Dead bodies have to be carried to Attock, Punjab in order to perform final rituals for the dead, said the petitioner. It was further added that moving the bodies to Attock is seriously problematic as separate ambulances are not provided to Sikhs.
Officials at the Department of Auqaf and Religious Affairs were delaying the proper utilisation of funds earmarked by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) government for establishing a crematory ground and a Christian cemetery, the petitioner said.
Justice Yahya Afridi and Justice Arshad Ali of the Peshawar High Court will hear the case that demands a dedicated ambulance service and a proper crematory ground for Sikhs.
The KP government had previously allocated Rs30 million for the crematory ground on the condition that land prices be within Rs100,000 per Marla. However, it is difficult to find land in the city at this price point.
