LODHRAN: A man committed suicide through self-immolation after allegedly being harassed and mistreated by the police here on Sunday.
According to details, Iqbal — a resident of Lodhran city — was disappointed over misbehavior and harassing of police which indulged his son in an alleged fake case and despite receiving bribes issued challan against his son in the case.
Iqbal set himself on fire by sprinkling petrol inside the district katcheri in Lodhran. He was rushed to Bahawalpur Victoria Hospital but could not survive and succumbed to his burn wounds.
The district police officer (DPO) took notice of the matter and suspended an assistant sub-inspector (ASI). He also directed the department to conduct an investigation into the incident.
In May, a young man, who kidnapped his aunt and was later arrested, was found dead under mysterious circumstances in Kotwali Thana. According to the police, the youth, Ghulam Yaseen, hung himself in the police station’s washroom due to fear of a confrontation with his family.
However, family members of the deceased claim that he died due to police abuse. The family held a protest at Kotwali Thana and district headquarters hospital.
