Nawaz habitual of maligning army when not in power, says Imran

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan lashed out at former premier Nawaz Sharif, accusing him of maligning the army each time he is out of power.

Taking to social media website Twitter on Saturday, Imran wrote, “So it seems to be habitual with Nawaz Sharif to malign the Pakistan Army every time he is out of power. He did the same in 1994.”

Nawaz Sharif, in an interview with a local newspaper, stirred a controversy that drew ire of the country’s top civil and military leadership when he said: “Militant organisations are active. Call them non-state actors, should we allow them to cross the border and kill 150 people in Mumbai? Explain it to me. Why can’t we complete the trial?”

Nawaz’s remarks were immediately picked up by the Indian media, which termed the former prime minister’s statement as a “confession of Pakistan’s role in the Mumbai attacks that left 166 people dead”.

The National Security Committee (NSC) called in the aftermath of Nawaz’s allegations categorically denied the statement, calling it “completely false and misleading”.

Since then, Nawaz has been in the cross-hair with his friends and foes maligning him alike.

On Saturday, some federal ministers belonging to the ruling party also distanced themselves from the former premier’s narrative.
