NAB authorises inquiries against HEC officials, NTDC BoD among others

ISLAMABAD: A meeting of National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) Executive Board chaired by Justice (r) Javed Iqbal was held at NAB Headquarters on Wednesday where inquiries were authorised against Higher Education Commission (HEC) officials, NTDC board of directors (BoD) among others.

The meeting authorised inquiry against Haier Pakistan and officials of HEC and others. They have been accused of selling laptops to HEC on higher rates causing losses of millions of rupees to the national exchequer. The meeting also authorised an inquiry against the management of NTDC, BoD and others. The BoD has been accused of appointing Fayyaz Chaudhry as the managing director without experience and ability. This caused Rs 20.4 million loss to the national exchequer.

It authorised investigation against officers of CDA and others for illegal allotment of land worth Rs2 billion in sector E/11 Islamabad, violation of rules and corruption.

The meeting authorised the filing of a reference against the management of National Highway Authority (NHA) and others. They have been accused of allotting tool plazas to their favourites and establishing an illegal CNG station at Rawalpindi which caused loss of Rs1 million to the national exchequer. It also authorised filing another reference against former Federal Urdu University vice-chancellor Dr Zafar Iqbal for opening an illegal sub-campus of the university in Lahore and for corruption, causing loss of Rs16.5 million to the national exchequer.

The meeting authorised yet another inquiry against the Utility Stores Corporation of Pakistan Managing Director and officers of Ministry of Industry and Production and others. They have been accused of abuse of authority, corruption and shifting amount from NFC accounts to private banks causing loss of Rs3 billion to the national exchequer. The meeting approved the closing of the investigation against former MNA Raheela Kausar and others due to lack of incriminating evidence against her while authorizing an inquiry against the complainant for lodging a baseless complaint against her. It also authorised inquiry against former Pakistan Railways chairman Arif Azeem and others on purchasing 58 locomotives and 40 power vans from favourite companies. This caused loss of Rs19,900 million to the national exchequer.

The meeting authorised the filing of a corruption reference against Karachi Port Trust Cooperative Housing Society Secretary Ghulab Khan and others for their alleged illegal allotment of commercial plots, causing loss of Rs1 billion to the national exchequer.

The meeting approved the closing of inquiry against officers and officials of National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) Bahrain owing to the absence of solid proof. It also authorised another inquiry against former Pakistan Petroleum Limited MD and other directors for devouring funds. The meeting approved inquiry against KASB Bank’s chairman’s advisor and others for withdrawing Rs3.114 billion illegally. The investigation was authorised against the officers and officials of Pakistan Steel Mills for confirming contract and daily wages employees by abusing authority, causing loss of Rs6.69 billion to the national exchequer. The meeting also authorised former Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) labour minister Sher Azam and others for buying land in violation of rules which caused loss of Rs10.75 billion to the national exchequer. It also approved another corruption reference against former Pepco MD Munawar Baseer Ahmed and others. They are accused of inflicting loss of Rs1.3819 billion to the country.

The meeting approved inquiry against the officials of Pak PWD KP for awarding contracts to favourites and corruption by making fake schemes. They inflicted loss of Rs2 billion to the country. Another inquiry was approved against officers, officials and others of Bank of Khyber Peshawar for appointing 1400 people by abuse of authority ،They have also been accused of doling out heavy debt to Pesco and Punjab Food Authority (PFA) and of inflicting losses to the country. The meeting also authorised the filing of another reference against former Excise and Taxation Balochistan DG Muhammad Qasim Baloch for registering vehicles in a fake and illegal way, causing loss of Rs1.5 billion to the national exchequer.
