GUJRAT: In light of the recent ‘honour killing’ case of the 26-year-old Italian-Pakistani woman, it has been confirmed that the woman was strangled to death by her father with a piece of cloth, whereas her brother overpowered her, a local media outlet reported.

According to police, the suspects on Thursday confessed to carrying out the heinous act. Moreover, Sana’s brother Adnan Cheema was distressed and regretted his act of helping his father in his sister’s murder.

Earlier, on Wednesday, the father, Ghulam Mustafa Cheema, had denied the police claim of his confession during his brief interaction with the media after the district police officer’s news conference.

The suspects granted a two-day physical remand by a local court on Thursday after forensic reports confirmed that Sana was strangled.

Police sought a physical remand from the local area court magistrate Lubna Sagheer for investigation purpose. The suspects will be produced in the court on May 12 (Saturday).

A case had already been lodged with the police under section 302 of Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) against three suspects, including a paternal uncle of Sana, Mazhar Iqbal Cheema, on the report of Sub Inspector Waqar Gujjar of Kunjah police.

However, the police released the uncle following the confession of the father and brother of the deceased.

The report issued by the Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) revealed the victim’s voice box was swollen and her neck was broken.

Earlier, it had been reported that the victim was strangled to death for ‘honour’ as she wanted to marry of her own choice in Italy, which led to the murder.

The case had been picked up on social media with the hashtags #JusticeforSana and #TruthforSana demanding justice for the departed.
