Policeman martyred, 13 others injured in Bannu blast

BANNU: At least one policeman was martyred and 13 others were injured in a motorcycle bombing near a police patrolling vehicle in Kohat Chowrangi area here on Friday.

According to police sources, a remote controlled bomb was planted in a motorcycle parked at General Bus Stand in the area. The explosive device went off as soon as a police patrolling vehicle reached near the motorcycle. The explosion killed one policeman on the spot and injured 13 others, including three policemen.

Talking to reporters, Bannu District Police Officer (DPO) Sadiq Baloch said the remote-controlled bomb went off near a police van.

The DPO said that the bomb was fitted in a motorcycle parked near Kohat Chowrangi and its target was the police patrol vehicle.

He said that although there has been no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack.

The police van and other cars parked in the area were damaged due to the impact of the blast.

Police started a search operation in the area following the incident. No arrests have been made as yet.

Armed forces launched military operation Zarb-e-Azab against militants on June 15, 2014, which authorities claimed to remain successful as it forced the militants to flee and abandon their compounds. However, almost of militants, especially their top commanders are sheltering across the border in Afghanistan.

As a result of military action, violent and terror acts are on the decline throughout the region but rare incidents occurring from time to time throughout the region including North Waziristan. A couple of days back, militants engineered explosions inside two Girls Middle school in different villages of Mirali Tehsil North Waziristan, which is situated near to Bannu city.
