WASHINGTON: Pakistan’s current envoy to the United States (US) might be replaced in wake of the strict limitations expected to be imposed by Washington on the movement of Pakistani diplomats in two days.
These developments come as a result of recent tensions between the US and Pakistan– once close allies in the war against terrorism.
Ambassador Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhary mentioned in a news briefing on Wednesday that the agrément for the new ambassador, Ali Jahangir Siddiqui, was received by the embassy Tuesday, which will eventually lead to his appointment.
He also said that he has requested for three weeks for winding up his engagements in the US capital, in place of the mandatory six weeks.
“I am a civil servant and I obey orders from Islamabad,” said Chaudhary. “I served my country with honour and dignity and I am ready to leave now.”
May 29 is expected to be Chaudhary’s last day as the ambassador of the US, only two days before an interim government is expected to take charge in Islamabad.
Siddiqui can stay for the next three months if the coming interim government agrees to keep him. Legal experts, however, are not clear if the interim government has the authority to make such appointments.
