KARACHI: The judicial commission investigating the non-provision of clean drinking water and sanitation on Tuesday, instructed Defence Housing Authority (DHA) to submit its original plan and details of the operational and planned sewage treatment plants.
The commission headed by Justice (r) Amir Hani Muslim directed DHA to resolve all untreated sewage issues, otherwise, the commission would take serious action.
DHA project advisers stated that there was a functional treatment plant but it was abandoned after the scheme was handed over to the cantonment board.
According to reports, there were four points from where sewage waste was falling into the sea from China Town to the Dou Darya food street area.
The DHA officers and the cantonment boards requested for a week’s time to undertake the exercise of submitting reports of working plants and resolving the issues.
The commission ordered for samples to be collected from all drains of DHA and the report’s submission on May 15.
Karachi Mayor, Wasim Akhtar submitted that the debris in the drains beside Empress Market shall be removed and the contractor shall also remove his plant and material from the drain. The commission observed that small drains shall also be cleaned and cleared by the respective DMCs.
The mayor further told the commission that the requisite notifications of handing over Gujjar Nallah and Mehmoodabad Nallah have not been issued yet.
