ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Wednesday denied reports which indicated that the commission suggested for the 2018 general elections to be held by the end of July.

A local media outlet stated that the ECP officials have been contemplating over July 25 or 26 as tentative dates. However, a statement released on Wednesday stated that neither has a date been fixed for the upcoming polls nor is any particular date being considered.

According to reports, the commission is working on the summary for elections date, which would be forwarded to the president.

Following an approval by the president, ECP would issue a schedule for the polls.

Moreover, the submission of nomination papers and publishing of final lists [of candidates] would be done within a set period of four weeks.

The current government is expected to end its five-year term on May 31, after which the caretaker government will take over to oversee the general elections.

According to the Constitution of Pakistan, the caretaker prime minister will be selected by the prime minister in agreement with the opposition leader in the National Assembly.

The prime responsibility of the caretaker government is to ensure that the elections are held in a transparent manner.
