KASHMORE: A policeman sacrificed his life in the line of duty on Monday during an encounter between the police force and dacoits in the Kashmore area of Sindh.

Station House Officer (SHO) Karampur Ali Hassan along with two others, was participating in the encounter when he was hit by a bullet from a machine gun and killed on the spot. A little later, his colleagues were also injured.

According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Basheer Ahmed Brohi, a robber Nawab Jagir alias ‘Inni Minni’ kidnapped four people and is currently holding them hostage for ransom.

The police further informed that they organised the raid in katcha area after a tip-off, however, they were attacked with automatic weapons as soon as they reached.  Therefore, as of now, the encounter is still underway and the local forces have requested back up, as well as, armoured personnel carriers.

It is pertinent to mention here that Upper Sindh and South Punjab are notorious for criminal gangs. These bandits commit multiple crimes including robbery, kidnapping and other illegal activities in katcha areas where they can hide and escape easily due to lack of accessibility.

In April 2016, gang leader Ghulam Rasool alias Chhottu along with 13 gang members surrendered after the army had to intervene in a particularly violent police operation against the bandits in Katcha Jamal on the left bank of River Indus in Southern Punjab.

A high number of hostages including 24 policemen, around the same number of women, 44 children and four aged men were recovered from the gang’s captivity, the army had said.
