LAHORE: The Lahore High Court (LHC) on Monday adjourned the contempt case against Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal for 15 days following an attempt on the minister’s life.

The interior minister was summoned before the court but he could not appear as he is undergoing treatment at Services Hospital in Lahore.

A three-member bench, headed by Justice Mazahar Ali Akbar Naqvi, is hearing a petition filed by a citizen Amna Malik.

The petitioner had stated that “the minister used derogatory language against the honourable judiciary in one of his speeches”.

“Despite the court’s orders, Ahsan Iqbal’s anti-judiciary speech was broadcast on television channels,” argued the petitioner.

Addressing an event in Islamabad on April 25, the minister had said that “Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Mian Saqib Nisar should abandon the practice of throwing insults in every direction and have a big heart instead of reacting at every petty incident”, adding that since the CJP had accused him of being involved in certain appointments, he should also issue a charge sheet against Iqbal.

On Sunday, Ahsan Iqbal was attacked and injured after an assailant opened fire at him during a corner meeting of the party in Narowal’s Kanjroor area.

According to the media reports, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader was attacked when he was leaving after the corner meeting held at MPA Rana Manan’s residence.

The police report had said that the accused revealed his affiliation with Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP).
