LAHORE: As many as 1,545 cases of violence against women (VAW) were documented by the government’s Violence against Women Centre (VAWC) in Multan from March 2017 to April 2018, reported a local media outlet.
The cases include 918 incidents of domestic abuse, 165 family cases, 99 cases of harassment and 89 cases pertaining to property disputes, according to the Social Welfare Department.
Two judges have been appointed by the Lahore High Court (LHC) to deal exclusively with cases related to incidents of VAW.
“The intentions are in the right place, but the problem lies in a follow-up system,” said Aurat Foundation’s Regional Director Mumtaz Mughal. “There should be a system where monitoring is done of women who go back outside to ensure that they are safe and this cannot be ascertained until the local government system in that area is strengthened,” added Mughal.
