MADRID: The Spanish government will not change its policy toward imprisoned members of the Basque separatist militant group ETA, spokesman Inigo Mendez de Vigo said on Friday, following the announcement of ETA’s dissolution this week.

“It’s clear that the government won’t modify its penitentiary policy,” de Vigo said when asked whether it was open to changing its stance.

Jailed ETA members, held in dozens of prisons throughout the country, and their supporters have lobbied for years to move them closer to their families in the Basque Country.

Basque Nationalist Party leader Inigo Urkullo said in an interview published on Thursday that the government was receptive to changing the policy after ETA was dissolved.
