KARACHI: The prime accused in the Safoora carnage case, Saad Aziz, was acquitted by an anti-terrorist court (ATC) in Karachi on Monday due to lack of evidence.
Aziz was booked under a police encounter and intent to murder case.
He allegedly attacked police in Gulberg Town, Karachi in June 2015 and fled upon retaliation.
Last month, details of the military court’s judgment which convicted five terrorists who were involved in Sabeen Mahmud’s murder and Safoora Goth carnage were sought by the Sindh High Court (SHC).
Defence lawyer Hashmat Habib was ordered by the SHC’s two-judge bench, headed by Justice Naimatullah Phulpoto, to submit the details within one month.
The convicts Nazir, Ishrat, Rehman, Minhas and Aziz had filed appeals against the military court’s verdict.
The court had found the aforementioned guilty of shooting and killing 45 members of the Ismaili community in May 2015.
