DAMASCUS: Syrian President Bashar al-Assad stressed on Monday that the foreign aggression on Syria will only make the Syrians more determined to fight terrorism and hold tight to their sovereignty and right to determine their future, according to the state news agency SANA.

Assad made the remarks during his meeting with an Iranian delegation headed by the chairman of the Iranian parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, Alaeddin Boroujerdi, during which Assad noted that the region is witnessing a stage of reshaping the international map.

The president said that there is an escalation in the foreign aggression on Syria, adding that the foreign powers have become directly engaged in the attacks after their schemes in Syria were rendered flat when the rebels they are backing have largely failed.

His remarks came in the wake of a new missile strike that targeted Syrian military positions in the countryside of Hama and Aleppo provinces in northern Syria overnight.

Activists said the Israelis were behind the offensive which is the third foreign attack on Syria this month, as Israel targeted the T-4 base in the central province of Homs earlier in April and the US, as well as other Western powers, launched a series of missile strikes on Syrian on April 14.

In both Israeli attacks this month, Iranian fighters were reported to be among the causalities by activists.

Israel has repeatedly warned that it will not tolerate Iranian military presence in Syria.

Back to the meeting Monday, Boroujerdi said that the schemes of the US and its allies in the region were defeated in Syria, adding that the latest attack will only empower and strengthen the axis of resistance, a term that refers to an anti-Israeli alliance between Iran, Syria, and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

The Iranian official, meanwhile, stressed that Iran will remain supporting Syria and will continue to push for reaching a political solution decided by the Syrians that would preserve the unity and sovereignty of the country.
