ISLAMABAD: The Supreme Court (SC) on Thursday passed a short order in which it stayed the shifting of schools and other educational institutes from the Cantonment areas within a time period of 15 days.

A bench comprising Chief Justice of Pakistan Justice Saqib Nisar, Justice Umar Ata Bandial and Justice Sajjad Ali Shah cited a previous judgement of the SC in a civil appeal in which a two-member bench had ruled that the evacuation has to be done ‘gradually’. The bench questioned the need for the haste that is adopted by Cantonment authorities in asking the educational institutes to evacuate the area.

The SC issued notices to the Cantonment Boards in Pakistan and sought replies from them for the urgency that is being pursued by them. The SC said that it may affect the educational career of thousands of students, and hence passed an interim order staying the evacuation until the next hearing.
