Life might return to Mohmand Agency as govt shuts down fifty per cent check-posts

MOHMAND: Following the orders of both the civil and military leadership, the political administration of Mohmand Agency on Friday has decided to shut down fifty per cent of the checkpoints in the agency, read a statement issued here.

Furthermore, the statement also said that the administrative responsibilities of check-posts have been handed over to civil administration where concerned authorities of Khasadar and Levies will execute duties from Friday onwards.

Earlier in April, military authorities had transferred their duties to the civil administration after maintaining law and order in Lower and Upper Dir districts for 10 years. Peace will be maintained with the cooperation of the security forces with the civil administration from now.

The transfer of power was followed by the Pakhtun Tahaffuz Movement’s (PTM) demand made in March which urged for the immediate return of all the remaining displaced families of Bara and Tirah to their homes along with handing over security tasks from the Frontier Corps (FC) to Khasadar and Levies at all checkpoints in Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA).

The PTM has held many peaceful protests in which it has repeatedly asked for law-enforcement agencies to stop disrespecting tribesmen, treating them like subhumans and unnecessarily misbehaving with ordinary people under the guise of cleanup and search operations.
