RIO DE JANEIRO: Brazil’s Federal Police (PF) on Friday said they arrested at least 14 suspects in a nationwide operation against child pornography.
The operation took place in seven states, including Sao Paulo, Minas Gerais, Rio de Janeiro, where officials detected the sharing of pornographic material involving minors.
Three suspects were caught in flagrante, while the remaining 11 were detained on arrest warrants, the PF said.
Those detained face charges of rape and torture, the agency said, adding they have identified at least 15 victims ranging in age from infants to 11.
Thursday’s arrests marked the second phase of Operation Underground, which was launched a year ago, when officials arrested 18 suspects in eight states.
In Brazil, child pornography carries a jail sentence of three to six years in prison, while rape of minors will be sentenced to 8 to 15 years in prison.
