KARACHI: Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Khursheed Shah on Tuesday said that he will try to ensure that the caretaker prime minister (PM) is a neutral person.

“The caretaker PM should not be a part of any political party,” he said while speaking to the media, adding that the general elections should be held as soon as possible.”

He informed the media that a meeting between him and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) senior leadership is yet to be held and that an advisory session will be held in the presence of party chair Bilawal Bhutto Zardari and co-chairperson Asif Ali Zardari.

On April 11, Shah had met with PM Shahid Khaqan Abbasi to ponder over the caretaker setup, which will take over once the current government completes its tenure on May 31.

Shah then met with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Shah Mahmood Qureshi at the chambers of the Parliament House as well, where he took Qureshi into confidence over his meeting with the prime minister. Shireen Mazari and Naveed Qamar were also in attendance at the meeting.

As per the Constitution of Pakistan, the caretaker prime minister is appointed by the prime minister in consultation with the opposition leader in the National Assembly.

Both the premier and the opposition leader then present names of three nominees each from which the consensus candidate is appointed as the caretaker prime minister.

The main responsibility of the caretaker government is to ensure that elections are held in a transparent manner.
