SWABI: A transgender person was shot dead in a physical assault accident that took place in Kalu Khan area of Swabi district on Sunday, said Trans Action Pakistan.
According to Qamar Nasim, an activist associated with TransAction Pakistan, the person named Khan Ullah alias Sheena was beaten up by unknown armed men on Sunday night after which the shot them dead.
He said that the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government had completely failed to provide protection to the transgender community, adding that at least 56 transgenders have been killed in the province since 2015.
The incident was confirmed by the Kalu Khan Station House Officer (SHO) Shafiur Rehman and a first information report (FIR) has been registered against unidentified men.
No motive for the killing has come to surface as yet.
Earlier this year, three members of the transgender community were injured after they were fired at in Swabi’s Yar Hussain Tehsil.
Pakistan has a long history of cases of violence against the transgender community. According to TransAction Alliance KP, seven transgender persons were killed in the province in 2017, while 208 cases of different kinds of violence, including sexual harassment, rape, gang rape, torture, extortion, denial of access to services, and misbehaviour at police stations and public spaces were recorded.
