Indian troops open fire on students in south Kashmir

SRINAGAR: Several people were injured after the Indian troops fired bullets and pellets on student protesters in the Lal Chowk area on Monday morning, according to the Kashmir Media Service news agency.

The injured students including one identified as Fayaz Wani were admitted to a local hospital in the district. The victim received pellet injuries in chest and abdomen. Anti-India protests and clashes between the army troops and the students were going on in different areas of Islamabad, Shopian and Pulwama areas.

On the other hand, scores of the students of the Government High School of Malpora in Bandipora district took out a protest march in solidarity with the Kathua rape victim. The students boycotted their classes and took out a protest march towards the main roundabout raising pro-freedom slogans.

The students were holding placards, showing different messages calling for justice in the Kathua rape and murder case. Clashes between the troops and the protesting students erupted in Baramulla as well, as the authorities closed all the exit points of the Boys Higher Secondary School after the students staged protest inside the school premises.

However, the students managed to come out and clashed with the troops who fired teargas shells on them. The students of the Government Girls High School in the same district also took out a protest march in solidarity with the Kathua victim. The students took out a protest march raising slogans in favour of freedom.

The students of the Government Ml Higher Secondary School in Hajin also held a protest march in the north Kashmir town. The students of the Government Higher Secondary School in Ganderbal district also hit the streets to express solidarity with the Kathua rape victim. The students boycotted their classes and marched towards the Degree College in Kangan raising pro-freedom and anti-India slogans.

The students staged sit-in at main roundabout on Srinagar-Leh Highway and blocked the busy highway for hours. The activists of the Peoples Freedom League also staged a protest demonstration in Srinagar to condemn the rape and murder of in Kathua district.
