KASUR: An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) on Monday granted a 5-day judicial remand of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) lawmakers and workers, allegedly involved in a rally that made derogatory remarks against the Supreme Court and the armed forces on April 13.
The Kasur police had presented the accused in front of an Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) after adding Section 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act (ATA) in a case registered against them.
Earlier on April 17, two separate cases were registered against 80 people including PML-N MNA Sheikh Waseem Akhtar, MPA Naeem Safdar Ansari, Chairman Baldia and other workers who had participated in a rally and allegedly abused the judiciary as well as security institutions.
The police had registered two separate FIRs – under sections 166, 506, 341, 228, 109, 147, 148 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC) – against 80 people and arrested 40 including two councilors, however, the section of the ATA was reportedly added after the interference of higher authorities.
Following the videos of the rally, which had made rounds over social media, the Punjab government had suspended the main accused, Nasir Khan and Jamil Khan from their posts in the Baitul Mal and Market Committee while also terminating their membership from the party.
The matter was highlighted by media, on which the higher authorities took notice and Punjab Inspector General of Police (IGP) Captain (r) Arif Nawaz ordered Kasur DPO Zahid Nawaz for the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against the MNA, the MPA and other workers who participated in the rally.
