KARACHI: The Supreme Court-formed water commission on Tuesday directed the Karachi Water & Sewerage Board (KWSB) to provide water through tankers to the areas where it is unable to provide the same through pipeline connections.
Justice (retd) Amir Hani Muslim, the commission’s head remarked that it was the administration’s responsibility to ensure the provision of water to each citizen. “If the KWSB perform its duties in an efficient manner, the people would not face hardship,” he added.
The commission head directed the KWSB to provide water through tankers at its expense to the areas facing water scarcity.
During the hearing, Local Government (LG) secretary admitted that the water is still being stolen from the city, saying that the government is making the law to avert subsoil water theft.
Justice Muslim also came down hard on the provincial authorities over their failure in cleaning drains, remarking that everything is fine on paper but there is no improvement on the ground. He directed the LG secretary and Karachi mayor to expedite the cleaning of drains and complete it at the earliest.
Earlier on April 14, the Supreme Court bench had also expressed its displeasure and directed the authority concerned to clean drains well before the monsoon season so the residents of Karachi do not have to suffer in the rainy season.
